Montego Jamaica

The name Montego Bay originated from the Spanish word “Manteca Bahia”; which was derived from the sport of hunting boars from the neighboring hills in earlier times. Once, this city was popular for banana and sugar trade but now it is a resort town.

This town is the second city in stature and significance; however, it is Jamaica’s tourism capital. People travel from all over world and fall in love with this friendly city which has a wide majority of hotel accommodation, transportation facilities and an international holiday center that offers amenities on an extensive level.

The tremendous growth in tourism for this town started in the 1920’s at the fabulous Doctor’s Cave Beach which engrossed well known persons from all over the world. The beach was said to offer curative health benefits from the mineral springs with the clear gleaming water which was also apart of this attraction.

There is the “hotel area” that extends from the town to the Dead End area; this is popularly called the “hip strip” which is a mile and one half in length. This is where you would find the Doctor’s Cave Beach; there are also other beaches that are located in this area. They each offer their own unique features and are in close proximity; there is Cornwall Beach and The Aqua Sol Theme (formerly Walter Fletcher Beach) closer to Doctor’s Cave, while Rose Hall and Tropical Beach is a little further of the hip strip.

On any given day the streets are jam-packed, colorful and lively. The Square, which is very popular for its heritage culture is said to be the heart of the city and has a pleasing cobblestoned focal point of action, this area also has the Cage, which previously was a detention center for the slaves that would runaway.

City center isn’t the heart of the town; however, it is the center for all your in-bond shops. There are three crafts market in Montego Bay one is located in the town area that is in close proximity to Sam Sharpe Square, however, the other two are much smaller ones and they can be found at the hotel district, old fort site, Fort Street and the other is across from the Cornwall Beach.

When it comes to shopping, numerous shopping centers can be found in this town and visitors can get their souvenirs, but if they want they can go further afield to where the shipping pier is located, they can shop at the Freeport Shopping Center to the western side and Blue Diamond, Shoppes a Rose Hall, Holiday Village at Holiday Inn and the Shopping Village of Half Moon, to the east of the town.

This beautiful town gives you the privilege of sampling the Jamaican cuisine and be entertained at one of the many locations on the hip strip. There is something for everyone, whether you are looking for casual or elegant dining. There are popular eatery, such as the Houseboat restaurant; Marguerites and the Pier 1 located on the waterfront.

Montego Bay is truly a gem of place to visit and whether you visiting for fun, business, entertainment, sports or adventure there is something for everyone. This city also has an extensive collection of accommodation, one can choose from the original, well-known extravagant hotels and the recent all-inclusive to the numerous small and more personal places.
